Sun Protection
Protect Your Health
Sun protection starts at the top.
Safeguard against wrinkles and harmful sun exposure by wearing a hat whenever you’re outside.
Hats are a perfect complement when worn with UV-filtering sunglasses and broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect your face and eyes.
Superior Protection
What is UPF 50+ Ultraviolet Protection?
Our hats were sent to the California Polytechnic State University. They were tested at the Textiles Laboratory and came back with glowing reviews. Our hats were tested specifically with the intention of finding out their UV transmittance rate. They scored UPF 50+ (a zero UV transmittance score!)
Factor (UPF) indicates how much UV radiation (both UVB and UVA) a fabric allows to reach your skin. UPF 50+ blocks 98% of the sun's rays and allows only 2% to penetrate, thus reducing your exposure risk significantly.
For the best sun protection:
- Choose a hat with a 3" or larger brim.
- Hats with vents (lattice) will not provide full protection to the open area.
- Water, sand, snow, and pavement can reflect the sun. Use sunglasses and sunscreen with your hat.
- The more skin your clothing covers, the better your protection. Whenever possible, choose loose-fitting, dark-colored, long-sleeve tops and long pants for the ultimate sun protection.
Sun Protective Style Selection
To check a hat's sun defensive abilities, hold it up to the light. If sunlight can be seen through the hat's material, destructive UV radiation can easily penetrate and reach your skin. The tight weave of our hats blocks those harmful rays.
Here are six examples of hats that provide exceptional sun protection due to their 3" or larger brim and the unique weaving technique used by the artisans who create Tula Hats.
